YORK EDUCATION FOUNDATION FUNDS GRANTS FOR THE 2024 – 2025 SCHOOL YEAR

The York Education Foundation is proud to fund seven grants totaling $22,103 for the 2024-2025 school year, with four grants at York High School, one at York Middle School, one at Coastal Ridge Elementary School, and one at Village Elementary School.

Finding our Flow, Annette Sloan, STEAM Teacher, CRES: 

Long term, community based initiative to study stormwater and drainage on the CRES campus. Teach science through hands-on learning, help students to become stewards of the environment, and ultimately re-landscape and re-playscape the area to make it regenerative rather than consumptive.

Talk it Up with Beegup, Stephanie Carboneau, Teacher of French, YMS: 

Pilot project involving the use of an online language learning platform developed by the French Ministry of Education called Beegup. Allows students to connect with students worldwide by engaging in text, audio, and video tools designed to promote independent practice.

Family & Consumer Hydroponics, Melissa Burlingame, Family & Consumer Science Teacher, YHS: 

Purchase the “Raise Garden” Hydroponic System allowing students to explore and learn about farm-to-table agriculture, nutrition, cooking and sustainability. Enhance hands-on, collaborative course by growing produce within the classroom leading to a myriad of learning opportunities.

YHS Courtyard, Laura Sunderland, Art Teacher, VES: 

Student advocacy group initiated project to create outdoor learning spaces, as well as places to relax, in little used courtyard areas. Improve engagement and mental health of students and faculty by creating art, science, and English themed courtyards.

The Regulated Classroom, Amanda Benoit, Counselor, VES: 

Born from a Maine DOE conference attended by Benoit and others from VES, the idea is to provide materials for self-regulation and coping for all classes K-4. Research shows that a co-regulated physiological state makes way for social connections, cooperation, impulse control, and academic learning

Using Drones to Teach Science & Engineering, Kevin Wyatt, STEM & CS Teacher, YHS:

Augment the STEM curriculum by offering a hands-on experience for students in an ever growing field. Improve students future job potential by adding to their 21st century skillset. Students will gain practical experience programming and controlling drones while exposing them to a variety of scenarios where drone usage can be applied.

Environmental Literature Projects, Christine Caprio, Pathways/ELA Teacher, YHS:

Pathways is designing a project based curriculum that combines English language arts, geometry, algebra, environmental science and social studies culminating in the construction of 10 “Aldo Leopold” patterned benches for YHS York Land Trust, and York Parks & Rec.
